of the Border Nudism
I can report that not much has changed in the last
year, meaning Zipolite remains fairly undiscovered; hammocks still rent
for a $1 a night, and well-bred backpackers (European and American)
still inhabit the ramshackle huts and cabins along the beach. Nights
continue to be low-key. One is more likely to hear The Doors on the
jukebox than anything else. Marijuana odors still compete nicely with
the fragrant tropical foliage.
And then there's the permitted
nudity, particularly on the western shore and Playa del Amor (aptly
named, as some couples find it a good place to vent their inner
exhibitionists). It's one of Mexico few locations where nudism is
permitted, and the tourists take full advantage of the opportunity for
Are the women more Ginger or
Mary Ann (keeping with the Gilligan theme)? Decidedly Mary Ann, with a
touch of Southern California free-spiritedness. Except during the spring
break period (late February to early April) I'd say the crowd ranges in
age from mid-twenties to early forties, though the permanent expat
population includes many in their sixties.
Mingling With Younger Nudists
Frankly, one of the big draws
for me is the ability to mingle with younger, and I'll add, highly
attractive nude women and teens. It isn't the frenetic sort of place
that Cancun is. People go to Zipolite to kick-back, relax and enjoy the
People have harped favorably on
Zipolite's "hippie" roots and culture, but it frankly seems
more Zen to me than anything else, though you'll see plenty of folks
living out their Woodstock fantasies. If you're a single traveler (male
or female, as many of the backpackers are), you'll have no trouble
meeting people. If you prefer solitude there's plenty of room for that.
If you stick to the west end you'll find people living 24/7 in the buff,
which if you haven't tried I strongly recommend you do. New daily
arrivals mean you'll never tire of the few. Day visitors from Puerto
Escondido often end up staying the night, meaning impromptu
accommodations are casually arranged. If there's a downside, the surf is
a bit rough and the undertow can be dangerous, crime is a minor worry
and as far as air-conditioning goes it's still the 1950s, which some
prefer... ("Nudist Mexico: Zipolite")
